![]() ![]() So what can be said of Skyward Sword HD, this revamped endeavor to bring the game from past into present and future? I dare say It soars. They might be right.ĭespite all this, people celebrate Skyward Sword for its well-told story, numerous likable characters, and heaping helpings of whimsy inherent to the franchise. Many have even said it’s the most flawed 3D Zelda game. Its identity is never entirely clear because, for all the things it does well, there are enough asterisks attached that the whole thing turns into a bit of an apartment rental contract. Skyward Sword is often at odds with itself. However, a few good friends go a long way toward making us care about a damsel in distress and the biggest Bigfoot we’ll ever see. How can a game packed with puzzles frequently come across as so bland and empty? Yet Hyrule also feels appropriately foreign. ![]() But it’s also an oddly empty world, owing in large part to the relative blandness of its skies but also to - and this is the irony of ironies - its overly dense spin on Hyrule. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HDis a game about pioneering in a strange world where nobody knows your name. And I’m on an important quest, and everywhere I go, the locals are essentially aliens, and they regard me as such until I prove I’m a pretty cool guy. And I do it courtesy of a big, beautiful bird. Even the wide-open air might grow stale once I’ve realized it’s all I can espy in every direction.īut what if I’m the first to fly? I’m the only one who can do it. The thrill of flight would come into conflict with the struggle to remain aloft. This game makes me wonder if something happened during the development that forced them to reuse these disjointed maps like this.I don’t like to think about it, but if I were to fly way up into the sky, I would see nothing but clouds and nigh-indiscernible specks of earth far beneath my feet. Couldn't they have come up with a few more areas? All these areas put together pale in comparison to the overworld in most other Zelda games. They open up a little bit on return visits, but still. What's worse is that all 3 of these areas are reused 3 times for the same kind of pre-dungeon questing. A lot of this pre-dungeon stuff is very linear, nonsensical, and simply not fun. Why am I collecting all this stuff? It comes out of nowhere, and it reminds me of Rare's N64 platformer design. I'm not against some questing and puzzle solving in a Zelda game, of course, but a lot of this stuff just reeks of filler content. It feels like the start of them bringing the dungeons out into the overworld, like they did in BotW, but the execution is nowhere near as good. Before you can enter any dungeon, you're forced to do quests for NPCs and go through obstacle courses, collectathons, and mini dungeons. The surface areas around the dungeons are where this game really starts breaking down. Did Hylia put the islands in the sky in TotK? Is Hylia herself in TotK? I'm hoping that having SS fresh in my mind helps me get the most out of TotK's story. It's very interesting because we know Demise and floating islands are both in TotK. She was basically just God in previous games. Skyward Sword also gives us some details about Hylia, like how she sealed Demise, created Skyloft, the Triforce, and the Master Sword long before the events of SS. There's some retconning going on here, but whatever. Skyward Sword tells the story of the first Link and Zelda, and introduces the evil being who possesses Ganondorf to create Ganon, Demise. There's a reason why Nintendo chose to release this game right before Tears of the Kingdom, and not something like a Wind Waker and Twilight Princess double pack. The main reason I'm playing this game now is for the story. I guess, in a way, we should be thankful that Skyward Sword was such a mess because it led us to A Link Between Worlds and Breath of the Wild. This game was so badly received by gamers that they completely rethought how to make Zelda games afterwards. Skyward Sword was the straw that broke the camel's back for many Zelda fans. That's when they were obsessed with reaching the widest audience possible with games like Brain Training, Wii Sports, Nintendogs, and Wii Party. Skyward Sword just came out during the worst possible time, Nintendo's "Blue Ocean" era. Some of this stuff didn't even come from Zelda games. Long tutorials, chatty companions, collectathons, gimmicky controls, you name it. Skyward Sword was where all of Nintendo's worst ideas came together. What better way to prepare for Tears of the Kingdom than playing Skyward Sword HD? I could think of a dozen better ways, but this is what I played. ![]()
